Seems that the former Senator from Tennessee stumbled upon an inconvenient truth of his own,, that those ethanol subsidies he pushed have contributed to a rise in food prices. Well, duh! Most sane people were trying to point this out during the debate on the legislation. Now, Prince Albert is saying that he is shocked, shocked to learn that food prices are going up because you take 41% of your corn out of the food supply.

Charlie Rangel . But it was close this week, he had close competition from soon-to-be-former Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi. Now Pelosi has some style, I'll give her that. A huge percent of the sixty Hous seats that flipped were taken by making Nancy the issue. To her this was proof of her effective leadership.
What won it for Rangel was the fact that, barring expusion, he will still be on the committee that writes monetary policy for the country. After being caught violating numerous House ethics rules he showed up at the committe hearing asking for time to find a lawyer. Now, he had one which resigned. Then he stonewalled claiming he needed time to get another laywer. The hearing committee was not having any of that and declared he had offered no defense. When the full committee met for its recommendation he showed up using his years of service as a defense. Then for good measure he brought in John Lewis to argue that he knew nothing of the charges against Good-Time Charlie but he was important in the Civil Rights Movement.
While Pelosi was reduced to being a yap-yap dog with a title. Not to worry, San Fran Nan still has potential and may win yet. In the mean time, however, this is for you, Charlie:

Sometimes it is better to be silent and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and be exposed as an Obama. Since He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Middle-Named seemed to think that declaring the Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court was a good idea he might have overlooked a few things. Not the least of which that any challenge to any of his initiatives might result in their being struck down on Constitutional issues. Even the swing vote on the High Court (Kennedy) has reportedly said he will not retire while Obama was in office. It's almost like they are spoiling for a fight.

Maybe they are and I agree with Red, White,Blue News' Rebel Rouser from Texas in saying it's about time.. It might be fun to watch this as it unfolds.

In the movie, Casablanca, Captain Renault was the pragmatic, quasi-corrupt but somewhat likable chief of police. Under pressure to do something he knew he shouldn't he concocted an absurd claim only to have that claim put to the lie almost immediately as seen in this clip:

This week's co recipients are Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, and Obama Shadow Government Czarina Carol Browner who after months of denying that they misrepresented the opinions that "peer-reviewed" their moratorium on offshore drilling, saw their lie crumble before their eyes with the report of the Interior Department Inspector General as detailed by Michelle Malkin. One caveat about the award, the recipients, like in this case Salazar and Browner, will not always be somewhat likable like Captain Renault. In fact, I don't see that ever happening.

Okay, first of all, I do not think that Barak Obama is an evil wizard. However, now that this recent flap over his middle name has reached the point that he has become He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Middle-Named I couldn't resist.

While keeping up with the whine-a-thon that has become the Democrat race for the presidential nomination, a couple of things are standing out to me that tell me the two left standing that really are not presidential material.

Hilary's constant droning how "everybody's being mean to me because I'm a woman" is proof-positive that she is not cut out to be a president. If she pulls that with her counterparts in other countries she will be laughed off the world stage. Anybody ever remember Maggie Thatcher pulling that? Anybody ever remember Maggie Thatcher getting her hubby to ride in and run interference for her? Nope, didn't think so.

Obama is a different matter. He is smooth and well spoken and his rhetoric sounds great on surface. Hence my problem with him, nobody is looking beyond the rhetoric at policy position. He makes people feel good. I don't doubt that he is a good man with good intentions, but misguided. I am also concerned that he too has too thin of a skin. I think it is ridiculous that we now cannot say his middle name. I don't care if his middle name is "Attila", I am more interested in what he is proposing. Making him into He-Who-Must-Be-Middle-Named is absolutely ridiculous. It is as ridiculous as opponents referring to him as Barak Housein Obama in hopes of scaring voters away from him. If he had renamed himself that after the fall of Sadam I could making it an issue. Since such is not the case, enough about his middle name. There are more substantial concerns about the man than this nonsense.

McCain's Problem with the First Ammendment

Senator McCain does not hold the First Amendment in high regard. Our first clue was McCain Feingold. How could anybody who claims to cherish the Constitution support, let alone attach his name to such a travesty. His defenders tell us he just wanted to clean up dirty campaigning. Well, McCain-Feingold has not produced the desired result. There are so many loopholes in it you can use it for a sieve.

Apparently the Senator is calling in favors. According to Michelle Malkin , Bob Dole is running interference for him. In a letter to Rush Limbaugh, Mr. Dole invited the talk show host to stop questioning McCain's bonafides as a conservative. Yes, this is the same Bob Dole who once told a critic to get back in his cage. I agree with Dole that eight years of Clinton was enough, I have a big problem with somebody with "Senator" in front of his name telling somebody not to exercise their right to express a political opinion. Especially when doing so on behalf of somebody else with "Senator" in front of his name who is running for President of the US.

If Senator McCain and his surrogates don't want their positions and/or character questioned they should stop engaging in questionable activities, like throwing their weight around politically to silence criticism, and continuing to shred the First Amendment. It's nice that Senator McCain supports the right to life and Second Amendment rights, I just wish he had more respect for the first Amendment.

For two weeks we had to listen to football pundits, commentators and clueless fans anoint the New England Patriots the winners of Super Bowl XLII. The odds makers installed them as fourteen-point favorites over the New York Giants. "The Pats will make history on February 3 and be the first team to have a 19-0 record in one season", they proclaimed. Some even said the fourteen-point spread was overly kind to the Giants.

They forgot one minor detail: the game had yet to be played. Many people bet the Giants to beat the spread, but the arrogant odds makers were so sure of themselves they didn't adjust the line. Not only did the Giants beat the spread, they went out and won the game! Sure that wasn't supposed to happen, but somebody forgot to tell that to the Giants.

Now, why am I posting this in a mostly socio-political blog? Mainly because of the Republican nomination process as it stands now. It looks good for McCain right now, which, in my opinion is bad for the party. The man who sought to be John Kerry's running mate and almost joined "Jumping Jim" Jeffords in leaving the party. The man who pays more attention to La Raza while making the Minute Men out to be some kind of organized crime family should not be this party's nominee. You may disagree with me, that is fine, I still love ya, I just disagree. And on balance, I would rather have the military in McCain's hands than those of Hillary or Obama. Just please reconsider choosing him as the nominee. Or at least think twice before anointing him.

I came across this piece by Cal Thomas via a link on Betsy's Page. The column deals with papers from Hillary's health care task force secured by Judicial Watch only after a law suit.

Of particular interest is a document by somebody with the initials "P.S." titled, “A Critique of Our Plan". The document contains an admission that critics of the plan were right and that the plan might not even be workable and that there was no precedent for such a government takeover of such a large segment of the economy during peace time.

Now you may be asking yourself why the news media hasn't been all over this. Well, there is a memorandum by Senator Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) that might contain a few hints. After criticizing the task force as being, "“secret cabal of Washington policy ‘wonks’” that has engaged in “choking off information” from the public regarding health care reform." the memo goes on to suggest that Hillary use “use classic opposition research" to “expose lifestyles, tactics and motives of lobbyists” (read: or any other critic for that matter). The Junior Senator from West virginia goes on to advise that news organizations were "...anxious and willing to receive guidance [from the Clinton Administration] on how to time and shape their [news] coverage."

Now you know why the MSM is not all over this.

Do we have such short memories that we would select John McCain in the primary? We boast of our conservatism and vote for a man who shredded the First Ammendment. We talk of boarder security and vote for a man who crafted an amnesty bill that could have been written by La Raza.
The only thing I can figure is that there were a lot of Dems taking advantage of the state's open primaries. Maybe it's time SC started partisan registration. This certainly makes a case. Then again, that won't stop RINOs from voting for RINOs.

...pain! As we were coming home from work a drunk driver ran a stop sign and broadsided us. Looking at the wreckage later I don't know how either of us survived that. When the wrecker yard attendant asked if that was it I responded, "It could be"
I came away with cuts and bruises on my legs and a real nasty abdominal bruise from the seatbelt. My wife, however, got her left leg broken in three places. Her left hand is broken and she was almost scalped. Yes, our lawyer expects to get something in the settlement, but that's not even in the foreseeable future right now.

The description of what happened makes it clear to all but the most starry-eyed that this was incited by the local imams. The mob is incensed that she will not get forty lashes, but spend ten days in a prison reputed to be a hell hole and be deported. Which is still, in my opinion a gross overreaction (to put it mildly) to the naming of a teddy bear.
Personally, I hope the vindictive secretary who set this chain of events into motion gets up close and personal with some of the more fun aspects of sharia law. A gross overreaction? Sure it is. But so is what she started.

Interestingly, the war protesters aren't even that inconsistent. The guns have begun to shoot and it's still "Tommy this and Tommy that...: with them. Just before my son graduated basic training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Georgia had a "God Bless Fort Banning Day" The usual suspects were out there protesting something that isn't even there anymore and calling prople who had never even been deployed, "baby killers". But that doesn't happen according to J.F. Kerry. I met a Viet Nam vet who, despite Kerry's assurances to the contrary, was spit upon when he returned.
No wonder Al Gore wanted military votes thrown out. He understands that "Tommy ain't a bloomin' fool - you bet that Tommy sees"

Michelle Malkin tells of anti-war protesters bravely standing up for their cause. They are successfully blocking the shipments of supplies to the military by using children as human shields.
Okay, this goes beyond freedom of speech. If this is not giving aid and comfort to the enemy I don't know what is. Especially since they, like our enemy, think nothing of using children. I've never been a big fan of child protective services given the way they tend to abuse their authority to push agenda, but this should be right up their alley, unless of course it doesn't fit their agenda.

This Guy Makes Me Laugh

No, it has nothing to do with his rapier wit, or incisive commentary. This guy is hilarious simply because his door is somewhat ajar. Some of his circuits hafe shorted out. Some one has removed the pins from one hinge and the last pin isn't far from working itself out. He made his tinfoil hat with the dull side out...well, you get the idea.

It seems that one of America's most visible magicians, David Copperfield, is being investigated for some unsavory acts that don't involve sleight of hand. That computers and hard drives have been confiscated is not comforting. That said, it is not uncommon for false accusations to be made against famous people.
I hope this is the case here. Magicians are often viewed with mistrust by many people and this will not help. I hope that justice is served in this case regardless of the outcome. If he is exonerated I hope those making the false accusation suffer the consequences. If they accusations prove true, I hope that Mr. Copperfield suffers the consequences likewise.

If I was a Hofstra LS alum my diploma would be in the shredder with the pieces on the way to the president with a letter of resignation. Then again, given that the name Hofstra doesn't leap to mind when you hear, "law school", it's probably a diploma mill in the first place. Their choice of faculty seems to indicate thus.

blonde sagacity: Murtha Refuses to Apologize to Marines is a headline that should come as no surprise. His claime all along has been to the effect of, "Well that's what I've heard." Now, as a private citizen he is entitled to form an opinion on the matter. That is not what I question.

My problem with him is the fact that he, as a member of Congress, publicly pronounced the eight Marines in question guilty. He did this without the minor formality of a trial, indictment or even an investigation.

Now, one by one, the charges are being dropped. Being the man that he is, did Murtha offer an apology to those who have been exonerated? Nope! Afraid that would be expecting too much from him. Maybe he's waiting until it's all over before issuing apologies...yeah, right.

Yes, I have been away for a while. Since I've been gone, my oldest has Graduated magna cum laude and headed off to grad school on the left coast.
The youngest has joined the Army and is home on a 30 day con leave when he and about a 3rd of his basic training platoon came down with mono. Not sure how it happened but the suspicion is bad sanitizing practices on the canteens issued when they arrived on base. So don't bother with the don't-ask-don't-tell jokes, they've been done...to death.

I don't watch award shows anymore. They have become little more than forums for self absorbed celebrities. Am I the only one who is NOT surprised by the Dixie Chicks doing well at the Grammies? This is a group who had to cancel concerts because people were not buying tickets. Why weren't they buying tickets? Because many viewed the Chicks anti-American and wanted nothing to do with them. Nobody is fooled by these awards, they won big at the Grammies precisely because of their anti-war, anti-military stances.

In a day where Oscars are handed out to movies that have "sprint audiences" (friends and family) simply because they or their stars are "on message" last night's Grammy Awards should come as no shock.

Sure, It's not the Stanley Cup, but...

It is a story worthy of the Stanley Cup. However, it is about the Liberty Bowl trophy. First a little background. Until 1995 USC (That's the University of South Carolina, not the pretender on the west coast who named themselves for a people who were fooled by a wooden horse) was 0-8 in bowl appearamces and held the record for the longest bowl losing streak (thank you, Notre Dame for releaving us of that "honor" this year). You would think that somebody would have noticed that the trophy was missing.
Well it was and it wasn't. According to The State | 01/06/2007 | Liberty Bowl trophy takes slow ride home to USC it had been entrusted to the team's long snap center, senior, Scott Morgan. Well, Mr. Morgan slept through his wake up call and missed the team bus to the airport, and, consequently the plane back to Columbia. Fortunately some of his friends were still in Memphis so the trophy rode in the backseat between two passengers. They did stop at a Hooters in Conyers, Georgia where it sat in the back seat covered by jackets (didn't want any UGA fans to get any ideas).
When asked if they did anything like drink beer out of it like has been known to be done with the Stanley Cup they replied that they did think about it, but the bell would not turn upside-down. The trophy did make it back undamaged except for one big crack, but it was supposed to be there.

Remember back in October how all we heard about how a certain congressman from Florida was evil incarnate, and how nobody's children were safe around Republicans? Remember the "bent-over page" jokes? Most importantly, remember how Republicans by-and-large shunned the guy when it came to light? I remember it all ad nauseum along with the Democrats' claim of moral superiority when it comes to their lack of toleration for sexual misconduct with children.

It seems their intolerance works only one way (big surprise). according to WorldNetDaily: Court shocker: 10 months for kiddie porn producer They not only tolerated, but actively lobbied for a light sentence for a child pornography producer named Andrew Reed. While Foley's conduct was reprehensible, at least it involved people over the age of consent in DC. This guy was using children as young as six. Reed was facing a possible 81 years, he got 10 months! 10 months! That is no typo.

It gets better, some of his supporters think that was too much!

And Oralene Graves-Simmons, a Democrat [emphasis added] who leads the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Association of Asheville, wrote a page and a half extolling Reed's virtues.

"When the decision was made in 2001 to incorporate the Association as an independent non-profit organization, Andy was instrumental in making it happen. He wrote the new organization's by-laws, revised and edited its incorporation papers, and, with me, determined the makeup of its founding board of directors," Graves-Simmons wrote.

"It was for his ten years of dedicated service that last January the MLK Association honored Andy with the 2005 Community Humanitarian Award," she wrote.

She noted he's also served on governing or advisory boards to the Montford Park Players, a theater company that operates each summer.

"Andy has spent all the years that I've known him bringing people together regardless of race, creed, color, or other differences, gladly working with anyone and everyone, and doing whatever needs to be done, to accomplish our mutual goals," she wrote.

Nice to know Dems only support child pornographers who are active in local political/cultural issues. At least he won't be permitted around children when he gets out. Unfortunately the ones who are children when he went in will still be children when they should be well past retiremant age when he should get out. The next time a Democrat mentions Mark Foley, just mention Andrew Reed and how they rallied behind him to get a light sentence. This is worse than their standing ovation for Gerry Studds.

By the way, the prosecutor responsible for this travesty is a Democrat (another shocker there).

Democrats ‹ It's in Their Nature

Perhaps I'm getting sentimental in my old age, but I was giving the Democrats until St. Patrick's Day to royally screw things up.

Now it looks like they won't make it that long.

The largely ignored story of the midterm election is the Democrats' mediocre performance at the ballot box. This election should have been the Gamecocks vs. Middle Tennessee State ‹ a blowout.

Instead it was Ohio State vs. Michigan, despite President Bush's poll ratings being in the toilet, public approval of the GOP Congress lurking in the septic tank, and the media broadcasting a nonstop pro-Democrat barrage of "objective" news specials like Cheney's Children: He Eats Them Boiled, Not Fried.

Give the Democrats credit for winning, but don't overlook the fact that the American people still don't trust them to govern. As Bill Clinton told a Democratic gathering after the election, "The voters haven't given us a mandate. They've given us a chance."

He's right. That's why post-election polls show that Iraq was the top issue in this election that handed power to the Democrats, and that 60 percent of Americans don't believe the Democrats have any idea what to do about Iraq.

This is the challenge facing the Democratic Party, to prove to the American people that they aren't a bunch of wild-eyed liberals pushing loony big-government programs.

Unfortunately for the former president, two days after his speech his wife announced that "Hillarycare" ‹ a wild-eyed, loony big-government takeover of the medical industry ‹ is back.

The Democrats haven't even taken over yet, and already Hillary Clinton wants socialized medicine; Dennis Kucinich wants to immediately cut funding for the military while its still in Iraq (you can buy ammo on your Amex, right?); and incoming House Judiciary Chairman Charlie Rangel, one of the most powerful members of the next Congress, can't decide which discredited 1970s policy to bring back first ‹ high taxes or the draft.

Every group of 200-plus politicians has its kooks, crooks and fringe activists. That's just a part of life. What's needed is a leader who can herd these cats, set high standards for ethics and performance and pull the party's center of gravity away from the extremes.

Instead, the Democrats chose House Speaker-to-be Nancy Pelosi, who is to middle America what Newt Gingrich was to the blue state West Coast: political kryptonite. Pelosi radiates the kind of San Francisco self-righteousness one would expect from a congresswoman whose city just threw the Junior ROTC out of every public school.

One of my rules to live by is that the problem with people who just don't get it is that they just don't get it. Watching Pelosi fighting to make corrupt and cranky John Murtha, D-Anywhere But Iraq, the new House majority leader (she lost), I wondered if it was possible for the Democrats to truly be this tone deaf.

Then word leaked that Pelosi might put a crook in charge of America's most sensitive intelligence information.

By the time you read this, we should know if Pelosi appointed Alcee Hastings, D-Where's the Cash?, to head the House Intelligence Committee. Yes, this is the same former Judge Hastings Pelosi voted to impeach for trying to take a $150,000 bribe from a couple of mobsters. (The vote by the Democrat-controlled Congress, by the way, was 413-3 to impeach.)

Pelosi is not dumb. She's not ignorant or uninformed. Neither are Rangel, Hillary Clinton or any of the other prominent Democrats already tilting their party to the left. So why are they doing it?

Because it's who they are. It's in their nature. The days of the Democrats as the "people's party" are long gone. They're the Left Coast's Party, the Aggrieved Interest Group's Party, the Internet Activist's Party.

Pundits asking if Pelosi can pull her party away from the loony left should start by asking the more fundamental question: Does she want to?

Justice for the GOP

What should pain Republicans most, and President Bush most of all, is that they deserved everything they got in the Nov. 7 midterm elections ... and more.

As I have written before, Bush lost his claim on conservative voters more than a year ago when he put open borders and runaway spending ahead of limited government and the rule of law. In 2004, I begged Bush to prove to the troops that failure in Iraq was not an option by firing the now former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. And I've repeatedly complained to anyone who will listen that this president has committed the most unforgivable sin of all: sending American soldiers into battle without a complete commitment to their victory.

From keeping former CIA director George Tenet in his job too long to keeping the disastrous military leadership that repeatedly got Iraq wrong, Bush has proven that something other than victory (loyalty? politics?) was his highest priority.And now, Mr. president, that's exactly what you've got, at the ballot box and in the streets of Iraq: something other than victory.

Watching Bush fire Rumsfeld the day after his party lost control of Congress was a nauseating mix of bad timing and missed opportunity. If the president were as committed to military victory as he is to political victory, Rummy would have been tossed long ago. Now both battles have been lost.For despite U.S. House Speaker-in-waiting Nancy Pelosi's claims that this election was about health care, tax cuts, Mark Foley's hard drive, blah, blah, blah ‹ it was all about Iraq.

The American people made their point and they made it clearly and unambiguously: If you go to war, you better win. If you don't, the American people are going to punish you for it. It's called "justice."

Some congressional Republicans are whining about being unfairly held responsible for Bush's mistakes in Iraq. Sorry, guys, but you deserve everything you're getting, too. For too long, you've confused "congressman" with "cheerleader." [emphasis added] You don't work for the president, my GOP legislative friends. You work for we, the people.

Or at least you did until Nov. 7.

Imagine if, after the second invasion of Fallujah, 100 GOP congressmen had lined up on the steps of the Capitol and demanded Rumsfeld's head. Imagine a Republican Congress that threatened Defense Department funding unless the White House presented a new plan for victory. Imagine how many House and Senate seats those Republicans would hold today.

And while we're imagining, what if President Bush had spent the past three years following Lincoln's example, littering the White House lawn with the heads of unsuccessful generals? Republicans would have won the midterm election and, more importantly, America might be winning in Iraq today.

That's the real tragedy here. Our defeat in Iraq might be a great victory for the Democrats, but it's a far more significant victory for the Islamists. Iraq was an opportunity to carve out a home in the heart of the Middle East for a modern, moderate vision of Islam. Instead, it's an opportunity being lost.

Iraq is going so badly that American and British officials are openly discussing making a deal with the Iranians. You know , the world's largest exporter of Islamo-fascism?

A deal with Iran would be like a deal with Hitler's Germany, and (as the Polish discovered in 1939) just as reliable.

So forgive me if I don't shed even one tear for the lost careers of a few big-spending congressional hacks. Pardon me if I don't cry over the defeat of a president who has understood the Islamist threat so well, yet handled the response so very, very poorly.

I'm not a "values voter" or a social moderate/fiscal conservative or a member of the Log Cabin Republicans. I'm a "results Republican." I want America to win. Period.

In war, there is no substitute for victory. Not even Karl Rove's amazing GOP turnout machine.

Impeachment by the Numbers

The giddy talk about impeachment from the Left has not subsided, Nancy Pelosi's assurances that will not happen not withstanding.blonde sagacity: Impeachment Papers...? has more on this.

Realisticly, can they impeach? Well, yes and no. The resolution of impeachment only requires a simple majority to pass the House. A simple party-line vote would give them that. When it gets to the Senate where the actual trial takes place it will become more difficult. Removal from office requires a two thirds majority or 66.6666 ad infinitum which translates into 67. A party-line vote in the Senate would be an embarrassment for the Dems as they only have 50 votes. 52 if you count the "Independents". They still need almost a third of the GOP to cross over. I have yet to see a "crime" in any of the whining currently being done by the Dems. If perjury wasn't enough of a crime to remove Clinton, I doubt 15 Republicans will support this nonsense.

Secretary-General Kofi Annan said that one of the problems in the negotiations for the release of the two kidnapped Israeli soldiers in Lebanon is the demand for Hizballah to return them alive.

I hope he said that because he fancies himself a comedian. Personally, I still think that on 9/11/01, upon learning what happened at the WTC he locked his office and began dancing in celebration. It's time to withdraw from the UN and expell every last one of them from US soil.

My father was a Marine. He joined during Korea and that "police action" (makes it sound like we were over giving parking tickets) ended as he was on the ship over there. They were called back before he ever saw combat (for which I am eternally grateful as my existance was kind of hanging in the balance since this was well before I was a twinkle in his eye).
My youngest son is enlisted in the Army on delayed entry pending his graduation. To Dad, all those on the boat with him, those who preceeded them who made it back and those who didn't: to Andy and those going in with him, who may or may not come back I say this; and all those who served in between Dad and Andy: Thank You.
It takes people like yourselves who recognize that there is something greater than self that needs to be defended. Thank you for your service, your courage and possible sacrifice.

Captain's Quarters has one of the better post mortems of last night's debacle. As hard as that was to take on the chin, things are not irredemable. They do not have a veto-proof majority in either huse. All their talk about impeachment should just bring chortles of laughter as they have nowhere near the two-thirds majority required for removal from office. This brings up another bright spot, Lincoln Chaffee's defeat took away one more cross-over vote from the Dems.
Sure it was not pretty last night. But let's treat it like a trip to the woodshed and see what we can learn from it (by "we" I am referring to party leadership. I know that is the wrong pronoun but I'm feeling tired and lazy right now). Simple things like not looking the other way when members transgressions are brought to our attention, rather than wait until they are brought to light. Leaning on miscreants to resign early on rather than seeing things like Ney resigning two days before the election. A little better vetting of candidates BEFORE nominating them. I might have had the pleasure of writing about "Former Congressman John Spratt" today if we had done a better job of anticipating possible issues.

Sure last night was bad. There is much that could be learned so it does not happen again. In the mean time, let's entertain ourselves with their little impeachment charade.

Firefly) which best describes my thoughts on a House of Representatives with Nancy Pelosi as speaker (include Harry Reid as Senate Majority leader if that comes about as well):

I cannot agree with Michelle Malkin (aty least not unqualified agreement) that conservatism did not lose. While a number of conservative referenda passed the legislators who will be working to overturn them now hold the majority. Their majority is not veto-proof (at least not without help from RINOs like the ones who stayed home yesterday) Let's face it, is the loss of Lincoln Chafee a sad thing for the GOP? Maybe congressional Republicans will reexamine the way they choose leaders and choose some with spines made of something more substantial than a chocolate eclaire. Heck, maybe a number will grow spines of any kind. They made a grievous tactical error early on by trying to "play nice" with the dams. Maybe they will wake up now.

Save Yourselves From This Corrupt Generation � Asbury President Resigns contains news of the resignation of classmate Dr. Jeff Greenway as president of my alma mater, Asbury Theological Seminary. Now presidents of institutes of higher learning resign from time to time, but only two years from the time you took over?
Something is not smelling right and fellow alumnus Peter kerr ('06) agrees. He did a lot of leg work and digging and unearthed a few things not reported (see his comment in the Corrupt Generation post linked above for the full text).

For starters we have this:

For the
second year in a row the executive committee chose to do a “formal”
evaluation, bringing in an outside consultant and polling subordinates,
instead of the standard yearly “informal” review. This is highly
irregular, with one source even claiming that in the 22 years prior to
Greenway there was only a single formal presidential review at ATS.

and

...according to ATS bylaws article VII section B, “The President
shall be evaluated annually by the Executive Committee” but it goes on to
say “The President shall be formally evaluated triennially by the full
Board.” Thus the incorrect type of review (formal) was conducted, and
that type of review should only be conducted by the full board. Notes
from the Board of Trustees meeting do not indicate their approval was
given for a formal review

Wait, it gets better:

the task force that conducted the
formal review hired an “outside consultant” that had a serious conflict of
interest, being a friend of a runner-up rival for Greenway’s position two
years ago.[emphasis added]

Now, Prof. Kerr goes on to tell how the facts did not mesh with the outside consultant's report. Agreed upon goals were substantially met. The claim was also made that Jeff was a "polarizing force" :

Among other allegations, the report claims the President
“polarized” the seminary community into half people who dislike him and
half people who support him. The faculty were “distressed and bewildered”
after the meeting with the board, and suspecting flawed data, they held a
plenary faculty meeting on September 5th. According to the minutes of the
“plenary faculty of Asbury Theological Seminary” dated September 5th, the
faculty voted on five resolutions. First, they affirmed “full confidence
in the Presidency of Dr. Jeffery Greenway” by an 85% majority. Second,
84% of faculty called for the executive committee to immediately “restore
Dr. Greenway to his full presidential responsibilities.” More than 90%
requested an emergency meeting of the full board to resolve the crisis,
and a majority resolved to postpone convocation “until Dr. Greenway is
reinstated to his presidential office.” Only one resolution did not pass,
gaining a 50-50 vote, and that requested the removal of the executive
committee chair due to his “inappropriate handling of the evaluation of
President Greenway and because of the faculty’s lack of trust in his
ability to resolve the profound impasse that these events have cast upon
the Seminary.” These votes of faculty in plenary session indicate that
the only “polarization” is not with regards to the President, but is with
regards to the Chairman of the Board. The executive committee has not
taken any action that indicates it values or respects this input from the
faculty, despite the seminary’s expressed commitment to shared governance
between the faculty and the Board.

This task farce (deliberate use of "farce" instead of "force") had no valid reason to dismiss Jeff. NONE!

Jeff resigned for the good of the school, while I am saddened by this I applaude him for it. I only wish the members of this task farce had the same integrity and would go and do likewise. If they do not, they should be removed and named persona non gratis. The most likely occurance is these people will aattempt to do that to myself and Prof. Kerr.

According to BREITBART.COM The House is going to look into Sandy Berger's little escapade at the National Archives.

Maybe it's just me, but shouldn't this have been done at the time t was discovered? Shouldn't it have been done before he was tried and convicted of a misdemeanor. There is no way to know what he took as there were only the originals. We are left with only conjecture as to what was in them. I have no doubt as to the answers to those questions. Unfortunately I have no evidence to back it up.

Michelle Malkin brings our attention to part of the Democrats website. The page titled Vetrans and Military Families This looks good in theory until you realize that they couldn't even be bothered to find a picture of an American soldier. That is a Canadian soldier.
This is nothing but election year support for our people in uniform designed to appeal to the collective short memory of many Americans. Am I the only one who remembers how they tried to disqualify the absentee ballots of active duty personnel in 2000?

Let's see, don't know their own country's uniform. Wants to disqualify military votes. Looks like support to me.

According to WaPo the House Ethics Committee investigation is going to focus on the way the information was handled. We might actually get an answer to the question, "If you were so concerned about improper conduct with pages why did you sit on the information until now?"
There is also the issue of the parade of "heroic whistleblowers" who pop up just as the previous one is discredited (one of the pages turned out to be 18 at the time and one is claiming it was a prank gone bad). The primary source, an ally of Edmund, adamantly proclaims that the former page is not a homosexual. The prank scenario was confirmed by a second associate of Edmund. Both are fearful that their political careers will be affected if they are publicly brought into the investigation.

The prank scenario only applies to the Edmund IM sessions and does not necessarily apply to any other exchanges between the former congressman and others.

The news come on the heels that Edmund has hired former Timothy McVeigh attorney, Stephen Jones.

The DRUDGE REPORT seems to have added a new wrinkle to the Mark Foley mess. It seems that his "underaged victim" was really eighteed at the time the IMs were exchanged. Unless there is evidence (Nancy Pelosi's speculations do not count as evidence) that he did in fact engage in sexually explicit communication with a minor then the criminal matter should be dropped.
That said, there is, however, the issue of unethical behavior regarding such communication with a subordinate. Such sexual misconduct must be addressed. It is obvious that Mr. Foley lacks the judgement and scruples that should be necessary to sit in the Congress...in a perfect world. Given the current make up of the political class in Washington, he seems to fit right in.

Even when he was in college, Albert Haynesworth was a cheapshot artist. His fans would turn a blind eye to it. That's not the game of football that's not how it's supposed to be played.", said Haynesworth after the game. They why did you do it, Albert. The man was down and his helmet was off! One of the problems with coming to the dance late is you often miss some good stuff like DUmmie FUnnies: "Should religion be outlawed?". I came across this from a link on DUmmie FUnnies on a related topic. The point that the fine people at DU seem to miss is that the First Ammendment protects more than their right to dissent even to the point of exposing themselves as fools. The ammendment opens with, "Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion, or prohibiting [emphasis added] the free exercise thereof".

Of course the reality-based community proceeds as if those words never existed to describe their utopis with all the silliness found in John Lennon's "Imagine". My favorite bit is this proposal:

1. no minor should be allowed to possess a religious text, participate in a religious ritual or enter a church

2. no adult should be allowed to possess a religious text without taking a course in comparative world religion at the first year university level, and all such courses should be taught by Unitarians or Atheists.

Congrats! You have managed to both establish a religion (Unitarianism) and prohibit the free exercise. Of course that is to be expected from a group that produces this little tid bit:

"It should not be outlawed but should be eliminated from politics as the Constitution mandates."

Wrong again. The Constitution prohibits the U.S. government from administering a religious test. It does NOT prohibit the electorate from applying the tennats of their religious beliefs in deciding for whom to vote. Then again, this is only their wish list and as long as the Democrat Party insists on gravitating toward the Ned Lamonts and Howard Deans that is all it shall remain. They are the tail that wags the dog. And this dog is the mutt that never leaves the pound.

Ain't that like me all over. On the eve of my second blogoversary I went up to Greer, SC for the funeral of a friend. On the way I made a stop and the fuel pump decided to die. Having replaced fuel pumps in cars before I figured a couple hundred bucks max. Boy was I wrong! $525 to replace the water pump (the pump itself was $300). My blogoversary is also my wife's birthday. By the time I got home not much was left of either so we did what we could for the birthday.

I am no fan of Charlie Rangel or Nancy Pelosi. By the same token I have to applaud their comments to Hugo Chavez after his insulting remarks regarding President Bush. While it is the right of every US citizen to be critical of members of the country's government, it is nothing short of diplomatic thuggery to go on foreign soil and insult the leader the country you are visiting. Bismark started the Franco-Prussian war over less.
Like Michelle Malkin, I would feel better about Rangel and Pelosi's defense of the president were it not for Rangel's "Bull Connor" analogy and some of Pelosi's own personal attacks. That said I was very critical of Bill Clinton during his administration. I even made more than a few personal comments about his character (or lack thereof), the same is true of Jimmy Carter. When either of them did anything I agreed with I complimented them on it. (The fact that such instances were rare not withstanding). That is my right as a US citizen. That right does not extend to visiting heads of state.

Likewise, (on a somewhat tangential note) nor does any church have a right to engage in blatantly partisan attacks like the church in Harlem that invited Chavez and others to continue the bash fest. Now the left is always wanting to pull a given church's tax-exempt status for handing out information on candidates positions and voting records on various issues. What happened on Thursday with Chavez and Samuel L. Jackson goes well beyond dissemination and that church should be looked at as well.

On September 6, Elizabeth Shoaf disappeared while walking home. She was rescued on September 16 after text messaging her mother while her kidnapper left the bunker where he was holding her. No surprise that her was a registered sex offender. There were the usual quotes from local law enforcement like:

“It’s an answer to a prayer,” he [Sheriff Steve McCaskill] said. “We have been working so hard and so diligently hoping for this outcome.

Over 100 volunteers helped in the search over the last week and a half. This is where one would normaly have the obligatory praise of the Amber Alert System. Unfortunately I cannot do that here. You see, the Amber Alert commissioner refused to issue the Amber Alert! His response was:

"If you pull it too often,I'm afraid that it appears you're crying wolf too often, and people will ignore it."

It was apparent from his attitude that he regarded this as a case of a runaway. Either that or he privately thinks it should only be used in the case of pretty blonde damsels in distress. But this was not the case of a runaway. She was allegedly abducted by a registered sex offender posing as a law enforcement officer. At least they caught the guy.

The Kennedy school at Harvard has found an interesting way to comemorate the fifth anniversary of of the attacks of 9/11. They are having one of the most virulent Jew-haters, second only to his successor to give an address on the subject, "ethics of tolerance in the age of violence". I am talking about former Iranian president Mohammad Khatami. In his latest installment of The Usual Suspects, Michael Graham takes a whack at Harvard. Since Free Times changes the column as Michael submits new ones, I am going to reproduce it in its entirety:

On the evening of Sept. 10 ‹ on the cusp of the fifth anniversary of the worst terror attack in American history ‹ many Americans are going to be angry, but for very different reasons.

Americans who don't get it ‹ liberal activists and unreconstructed Clintonistas ‹ will be upset over the Sept. 10 premiere of ABC's miniseries The Path to 9/11. This six-hour docudrama based on the 9/11 Commission report allegedly suggests that the guy who'd been president for the eight years leading up to Sept. 11 might be slightly more culpable for the massive intelligence failure than the guy who'd been in office a mere eight months.

No wonder Democrats are outraged.

The film points out that President Clinton refused to give the order to kill Osama bin Laden when we had him in our sights in 1998. It shows the impact of the disastrous and legally unnecessary "wall" between the FBI and CIA dreamed up by Jamie Gorelick that allowed the 9/11 hijackers to slip into the United States unmolested.

But everyone made mistakes before 9/11. Clinton, Bush, Sandy Berger, George Tenant ‹ as a nation, we just didn't get the danger we faced from Islamist terror. Don't get mad about people who didn't get it five years ago. Instead, get mad at the Americans among us who still don't get it today. You'll find them at Harvard University.

On the same evening ABC unveils its docudrama, the folks at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government usher in the fifth anniversary of 9/11 with a speech by an anti-Semitic, Islamist terror sponsor.

Harvard's special guest Sept. 10 is none other than former Iranian President Mohammad Khatami. He's been invited to speak on the topic "ethics of tolerance in the age of violence." It's an interesting choice for a man who was the president of Iran at a time when it was rounding up pro-democracy college students and throwing them in jail (I suppose that's the "tolerance" part) to be tortured and sometimes killed (that would be the "violence" portion of the program).

Every year President Khatami served in office, Iran was listed by the State Department, and acknowledged by the United Nations, as the world's leading terror sponsor. It remains so today.

Khatami's Iran poured money into Hezbollah ‹ a group founded under Khatami's watchful eye in the 1980s while he served as minister of culture and Islamic propagation. Iran still supports Hezbollah.

President Khatami's Iran was secretly developing nuclear weapons and lying to the United Nations about it the entire time. Why is Iran so desperate for nuclear weapons? Perhaps it's because President Khatami called for the total destruction of Israel ‹ a position both he and the nation of Iran still hold today.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations, which organized Khatami's trip, considers him a "moderate," reminding us yet again that, in CAIR's opinion, a "moderate" Muslim is one who only wants to kill Jews.

Does Harvard share that opinion? Who knows? What we do know is that Harvard now has an official open-door policy to anti-Semites.

Can you imagine a family member of a 9/11 victim sitting in that audience listening to this terrorist talk about þ well, anything? Can you imagine a family who lost an American soldier in Iraq to a roadside bomb funded by the Iranians sitting through this Islamo-fascist's sermon on terror and tolerance?

The prospect is too terrible and intolerable to consider. So why is it happening? Why isn't the Angry Left angry about this, about a real member of a real fascist regime that really does terrorize its neighbors and endanger the world?

Oh, that's right. They're too busy defending Bill Clinton from the insults of an "unfair ABC docudrama" to focus on a real terrorist.

Captain Ed is calling a spade a spade. Dems in congress sent a letter to ABC protesting the upcoming 9/11 miniseries. The letter contains what some are considering (and I tend to agree with them) a thinly veiled threat to ABC regarding their license.

Of course the Dem apologists are pointing to the reaction to CBS' planning to air Barbara Streisand's hamartography of Ronald Reagan. CBS thought better of it and changed the venue to a cable outlet. However, AT NO TIME did anybody in the GOP with any governmental policy authority threaten to pull CBS' license.

What was ABC's offense? The program points out the Clinton admin's failure to bring in, dead or alive, Osama Bin Ladin. That they had the opportunity on more than one occasion is well known. What they seem to be objecting to is that now the Clinton legacy is in the hands of historians and not faring well. Without the coercive power of government they have no way of controlling its portrayal for posterity. Sorry, Bill. Your record is what it is. Maybe if you had not sent Sandy Berger (one of the Clinton people screaming loudest) on that little search and destroy mission to the National Archives people would not view you with such suspicion. Between that and the recent actions of your buddies in congress we now have cause for alarm at what might happen should the Democrats regain the majority of either house this year.

In an excellant piece inCaptain's Quarters, Capt. Ed looks at the filing itself and the suit. Even before I read the Captain's assesment I already had sugar plums dancing in my head at the thought of getting Joe Wilson under oath. What I would love to see is Cheeney, Rove and Libby adopt a Br'er Rabbit "please don't throw me in that briar patch" posture at this point. But if they do not, then I will settle for, "Just bring it!"

Because when they do, the defense is going to take that law suit, polish it up nice and shiney and shove it straight up their candy a**es!

The Quest for Legitimacy

Lost In Lima Ohio describes an underhanded attempt by the odious Lindsey Ashford and Todd Nickerson to use a legitimate children's charity to give him and his fellow pedophiles a veneer of respectability. It seems that he sent his Alice Day collection, totalling in excess of $1000(the figure keeps changing with each retelling), to Save the Children. Now StC accepted the donation without reading the letter (this according to StC). Using the form letter informing him of the acceptance of the donation he issued a press release where it boasts that StC's acceptance of the money conferred some kind of recognition that they really aren't such bad people after all (not his exact words but clearly the impression he wished to leave).

Now if Nickerson et al wish to make donations to legitimate charities, fine. But do not turn it into a PR stunt like he did. Lilo of Lost in Lima Ohio and another blogger made sure that Save The Children was aware of Mr. Nickerson's activities. When StC learned of the nature of Nickerson's website, they returned the donation. Ever since then Nickerson and his cohorts have been having a hissy fit. After i post this I fu7lly expect "Gary" to return and "enlighten" us on how we are too stupid to understand that they mean no harm. His posts, this time, will be deleted as soon as I can get to them. This is one opinion which is not open to debate here. I guess that is how they deal with being exposed as the opportunists they are. They wouldn't hesitate to have their way with a child, so why should we expect them not to turn what should have been a charitible contribution into public relations stunt.

This, however, is not the worst thing they have done. It seems that Lindsey Ashford has a voting guide. He is handing out political endorsements based on the attractiveness of a candidate's children or grandchildren. They even include pictures. Currently their endorsement is for Senator Barak Obama. I wonder what his reaction to this is. Lilo has the link, I don't have the stomach to put it here this morning, maybe later.

Let's Give Him the Same Presumption

It leems that the left's latest military darling is like their previous one (John Kerry)a decorated war hero whos decorations are now called into question.

Col. Cut-n-run seems to be a prime example of what Ann Coulter was talking about. Somebody who they think their opponents cannot question. If they do the opposition is met with, "How dare you! S/He is a decorated vetran/grieving widow". Now there are allegations that the only thing Murtha did to earn his Purple Heart was to beg for it according to allegations made by WWII vetran, Harry M. Fox (USN).

Now, Murtha apologists will (rightly) point out that these are only allegations. It will also be further pointed out that he is entitled to the presumption of innocence. I agree. Therefore I will extend to Col. Cut-n-run the same presumption of innocence that he has extended to the Marines accused in the Haditha incident. Don't forget, he has already tried and convicted them even though the investigation is incomplete and no Courts Martial has even been conviened.

We Really Should Wait

I have been quiet of a couple of issues. Namely, Haditha and the Duke lacross team. It is not that I have no opinion on either. I think the process should take its course in both cases. In my younger days I was very vocal about my support of the troops after My Lai. Blindly so. I want to see ALL appropriate and relevent investigations and legal proceedings.
These things should not be tried by the public in either the press, Halls of congress or even the blogosphere. My opinions are my own and are right until proven otherwise, but I also do not like the taste of my words either.
Unfortunately, all coverage seems to be on either one side of the other with no one seeming to want to mediate between the two. The truth is going to be somewhere between the extremes of the coverage.

I Promise to not Liveblog the Event

As some of you know, I have diverticulosis. Which is pretty benign in and of itself. If, however, one of the diverticulae becomes inflamed or infected it becomes diverticulitis which can develope into peritinitis. About a month back I had what seemed to be the onset of a diverticulitis attack. It passed, sort of. I noticed when I went back to rugby practice the pain in the lower left persisted but no other symptoms.

I visited the doctor last week who referred me to a gastrointerologist. Yesterday the gi ordered me to have a colonoscopy. All I can say at this point is that there will definately be no posts here on June 7 except maybe to report results.
I will spare you a blow-by-blow of the event, though. I am hoping this rules out the necessity for surgery and more time lost from work.

Donations will be appreciated though as I've already lost time and income due to whatever is causing this incessant pain.
